I am finally getting my B.A. in Communications and want to pursue a career in mass media. Woo hoo!
Free HIV Testing
In light of HIV/AIDS Awareness Month, representatives from TACT came to ODU last week to provide free HIV testing. Free testing was held last Thursday and Friday in the River Rooms in Webb Center. On Thursday, tests were similar to those of blood sugar tests where they pricked your finger and tested your blood for the virus. Students who went to get tested on Friday were given mouth swab that tested for the oresence of antibodies. The mouth swab results came back in 20 minutes. During the testing, students were asked to fill out a waiver giving their consent to be tested for HIV, and asked if they were sexually active. Next, they were given the mouth swabs and sent to another room to get counseling from a TACT representative where they were asked questions about their sexually history. They also were asked to fill out a survey. Representatives were very friendly and gave students their contact information to the free testing sites. I strongly encourage each of you to get tested and know your status.
Go Green Fashion Show
Also on November 10, the Go Green Committee sponsored the Go Green Fashion Show put on by the Fashion Association. The purpose was to show students how to take their basic wardrobe and "go green" with it. The clothes were provided by the Textiles and Construction class, Plato's Closet, and thruft stores. Four students were given the opportunity to design their own outfit without using fabric and compete for best outfit. There were outfits made of paper and plastic and the winner received money on their Monarch Plus card.
Diabtetes Awareness
On Wednesday, November 3rd, ODU's Black Student Alliance had a representative from student health services come and talk to students about diabetes awareness. She provided information about types of diabetes, myths, and ways to stay healthy with diabetes including tips o diet and exercise. After the lecture, students played Jeopardy and a food relay game based on the information that was given.
