Senior Events begin tonight with the Black Alumni Chapter Welcome Recpetion at 6pm in the Alumni Center. Next Friday, December 17, the Senior Brunch and Toast will be held at the Ted Constant Center at 10:30am. After these four long but short years, I'm happy that it's over. I am finally getting my B.A. in Communications and want to pursue a career in mass media. Woo hoo!
Free HIV Testing
In light of HIV/AIDS Awareness Month, representatives from TACT came to ODU last week to provide free HIV testing. Free testing was held last Thursday and Friday in the River Rooms in Webb Center. On Thursday, tests were similar to those of blood sugar tests where they pricked your finger and tested your blood for the virus. Students who went to get tested on Friday were given mouth swab that tested for the oresence of antibodies. The mouth swab results came back in 20 minutes. During the testing, students were asked to fill out a waiver giving their consent to be tested for HIV, and asked if they were sexually active. Next, they were given the mouth swabs and sent to another room to get counseling from a TACT representative where they were asked questions about their sexually history. They also were asked to fill out a survey. Representatives were very friendly and gave students their contact information to the free testing sites. I strongly encourage each of you to get tested and know your status.
Go Green Fashion Show
Also on November 10, the Go Green Committee sponsored the Go Green Fashion Show put on by the Fashion Association. The purpose was to show students how to take their basic wardrobe and "go green" with it. The clothes were provided by the Textiles and Construction class, Plato's Closet, and thruft stores. Four students were given the opportunity to design their own outfit without using fabric and compete for best outfit. There were outfits made of paper and plastic and the winner received money on their Monarch Plus card.
Diabtetes Awareness
On Wednesday, November 3rd, ODU's Black Student Alliance had a representative from student health services come and talk to students about diabetes awareness. She provided information about types of diabetes, myths, and ways to stay healthy with diabetes including tips o diet and exercise. After the lecture, students played Jeopardy and a food relay game based on the information that was given.

Football Season 2010
I have been to a few football games since the season started, and I have to say that the first game was the BIGGEST and MOST EXCITING (until the Homecoming game at least). Foreman Field and the stadium was filled with Monarch Pride from students, alumni, and ODU football fans. The cheerleaders. dance team and Big Blue all kept the crowd cheering and excited. Football t-shirts, noisemakers and clappers were all handed out during the game. Hundreds of students and fans have been to every game since the start of the season, while others may have only been to a few. Below are the dates and scores for every game this season thus far.

BSA Halloween Party for the Kids
Last Saturday, October 16, the Black Student Alliance along with other student organizations hosted the annual Halloween Party for the Kids. It was from 12-3pm in the North Mall of Webb Center and some of the activities included face painting, mask decorating, and make-your-own candy treat bags. Children from the community began to arrive at about a quarter to 1:00 and it was nonstop fun until the end. Kid friendly Halloween themed music was played while children were able to decorate their own sugar cookies, decorate paper plate masks, and interact with each other and the members of the organizations. The kids had a chance to hit the pinatas and collect candy. There was even a costume contest and guess how much candy was in a jar provided by the men of 3D. The Halloween Party was very successful and the students were very happy to have provided such a good and fun act of community service for all of the children.

"Welcome to the Block" Block Party
The Black Student Caucus of ODU kicked off this weekend with a very fun campus event. The "Welcome to the Block" Block Party was held on Friday evening on the steps of Kaufman Mall in front of Webb Center. The event featured live performances by participating students and organizations which included singing, dancing, poetry, and stepping. They also featured representatives of the Black student organizations on campus who came up and shared some information about their organizations. There were representatives from the Black Student Events Board, the Black Student Alliance, National Society of Black Engineers, the National PanHellenic Council, NAACP, and the Black Student Caucus. In between performances the hosts held raffle ticket drawings and encouraged the crowd to donate money towards diabetes. 103 Jamz radio station's DJ Jack of Spade provided the music for the event which last from 6pm until about 9pm. Although there wasn't a very big crowd in the beginning, the event had a very successful turnout and was very enjoyable for those who attended.
